How to Choose the Right Air Conditioner

Cooling Load & Area Size

  • Before choosing an air conditioner rental, calculate the square footage or cubic volume you need to cool, plus insulation quality and any heat-generating equipment inside
  • Undersized units run constantly without reaching the target temperature, while oversized units short-cycle and waste energy without properly cooling the space
  • Use a BTU-per-square-foot estimate to narrow down tonnage, then confirm the exact size with a rental specialist for tighter tolerances

Application & Temperature Requirements

Power Availability, Ducting & Venting

  • Confirm the available voltage, phase and amperage onsite, since larger industrial air conditioners typically require 208 to 460V three-phase power rather than a standard outlet
  • Plan ducting or venting runs to route exhaust air outside the conditioned space, and account for hose length limits when placing the unit
  • Verify power and clearance needs up front so the setup doesn't stall once the unit arrives onsite

¿Qué tamaño de aire acondicionado necesito?

Choosing the right size air conditioner depends on the size of the space you wish to cool. Generally, you need 20 BTUs per square foot of space. To convert this to tons, divide the total BTUs by 12,000. For example, a 1,200-square-foot space would need 24,000 BTUs or 2 tons of cooling per hour.

Do I need to vent portable and industrial air conditioners?

Yes, both portable and industrial air conditioners need to be vented in order to remove the heat from the space. Typically, air conditioners are vented through windows, doors, ceilings or walls through ducting.

What should I consider when renting a portable air conditioner?

When considering renting a portable air conditioner, first determine the square footage of your space to choose a unit with the correct BTU rating. Next, ensure you have a proper way to vent the hot air outside, such as through a window, ceiling or door. Finally, check the electrical requirements of the unit to confirm your site's outlets can safely support its power draw.
